Gliclazide Metformin

Gliclazide Metformin

Gliclazide Metformin

I have been taking metformin for quite a while now and a few months ago was told I should take gliclazide as well. Started on 80mcg x 1 daily, for a few days and although my blood sugars improved it gave me such a headache it was reduced to 40mcg but still gave me headaches so I stopped taking it. My blood sugars were not as good again so it was agreed that I should halve the 40mcg tablet, so only taking 20mcg daily now and hopefully I would get used to it and then increase the dose to 40mcg again.

But I now have another problem in that I have developed acid reflux with this burning in my throat and it seems to go down to my stomache and whatever I eat it makes it worse.

Is it because of the gliclazide or combination of gliclazide and metformin?

Has anybody else had this problem? Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks

Hi Members,

Hope you enjoyed the weekend.

Trajenta (Linagliptin), a DDP-4 inhibitor,  has been licensed in the UK. So that you are uptodate for your Monday clinics, I’m making the ‘Fact sheet’ and ‘Press release’ available. Please read through the ‘Summary of Product Characteristics’.

Here are the salient points from my study at this point:

  1. For use in T2DM in adults of all age groups
  2. Licensed as monotherapy
  3. Licensed for use with Metformin
  4. Licensed alongside Metformin and Gliclazide (consider reducing Gliclazide as risk of hypoglycaemia)
  5. Dose: 5mg OD
  6. Weight-neutral
  7. Low risk of hypoglycaemia when used with a sulphonylurea
  8. HbA1c reduction: 0.5-0.7%
  9. Avoid in pregnancy and lactation
  10. Primarily excreted via bile, so safe in all stages of chronic kidney disease
  11. No dose adjustment required in mild, moderate or severe hepatic impairment

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,
